  Steel flanges are an essential component of industrial piping systems. Currently, flanges on the market are mainly divided into forged flanges and cast flanges. Due to differences in manufacturing processes and performance characteristics, their applicable scenarios are also quite different. As a professional flange supplier, Shengtian Group has focused on forged flanges as its main product for many years, winning the trust of domestic and international customers with its professional service and honest attitude.

  I. What is a forged flange?

  1. Definition Forged flanges are flanges manufactured using a forging process. This involves applying pressure to a metal billet using forging machinery, causing plastic deformation to form a flange product that meets dimensional and shape requirements. The forging process effectively eliminates internal defects such as porosity, air bubbles, and slag inclusions in the metal, resulting in finer metal grains and a more compact structure, thereby improving the flange's mechanical properties.

  2. Types of Forged Flanges (ASME B16.5) Based on the product structure and connection method to the pipeline, forged flanges are mainly classified into the following categories:

  Slip-on flanges: Simple structure, low cost. Welding only requires welding to one side of the flange and pipeline, suitable for low-pressure conditions.

  Butt-welded flanges: The flange neck is butt-welded to the pipeline, resulting in uniform stress and good sealing performance, suitable for medium and high-pressure pipeline systems.

  Socket-welded flanges: Connect to the pipeline via a socket, offering excellent sealing performance, often used in high-temperature, high-pressure pipelines carrying toxic media.

  Threaded flanges: No welding is required; the flange connects to the pipeline via threads, making installation convenient and suitable for scenarios where welding is inconvenient.

  Loose flange: Consists of a slip-on flange ring and a short section welded to the pipe. The flange ring can rotate freely, facilitating bolt hole alignment. Suitable for pipelines requiring frequent disassembly or difficult alignment.

  Blind flange: A solid disc without a center hole, used to seal the ends or openings of a piping system for isolation, maintenance, or to provide an interface for future expansion.

  3. Production Standards Forged flanges are manufactured according to strict international and domestic standards to ensure product versatility and quality:

  International Standards: Primarily American standards, such as ANSI/ASME B16.5 (covering 150-2500 lb forged steel flanges), ANSI/ASME B16.47 (for large-diameter forged flanges, divided into A and B series); European standard EN 1092-1 (forged flanges applicable to the European market).

  Domestic Standards: GB/T 9112-2020 (Types and Parameters of Steel Pipe Flanges), GB/T 9113-2020 (Integral Steel Pipe Flanges), meeting the needs of domestic industrial piping systems.

  4. Material Standards The material selection for forged flanges must match the working conditions. Common material standards are as follows:

  Carbon Steel: ASTM A105 (for high-temperature environments), ASTM A350 LF2 (for low-temperature environments);

  Stainless Steel: ASTM A182 F304/F304L, F316/F316L, F321, ASTM A182 F51 (duplex stainless steel), etc.;

  Alloy Steel: ASTM A182 F11, F22, F91, etc. (suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure environments);

  Special Alloys: Monel, Inconel, and other corrosion-resistant alloys;

  5. Application Advantages Excellent Mechanical Properties: The forging process gives flanges strength, toughness, and fatigue resistance far exceeding those of cast flanges. They can withstand high pressure and impact loads and are not prone to cracking or deformation during long-term use.

  Reliable sealing performance: The dense metal structure and high-precision machining of the sealing surface ensure a tight fit with the gasket, effectively preventing media leakage, especially suitable for high-temperature, high-pressure, and corrosive media applications.

  Long service life: Fewer material defects and strong corrosion resistance (such as stainless steel forged flanges) reduce wear and corrosion damage, lowering pipeline system maintenance costs.

  II. Introduction to Cast Flanges

  1. Definition

  Cast flanges are flanges manufactured using the casting process. This involves melting metal (such as cast iron or cast steel), pouring it into a pre-made mold, and then, after the molten metal cools and solidifies, performing simple machining to form the flange product. The casting process does not require complex forging equipment and can quickly produce flanges with complex shapes, but internal defects are prone to occur during the metal cooling process.

  2. Product Types

  Based on casting materials and processes, cast flanges are mainly divided into:

  Cast Iron Flanges: Including gray cast iron flanges and ductile iron flanges.

  Cast Steel Flanges: Such as carbon cast steel flanges and alloy cast steel flanges.

  Stainless Steel Cast Flanges: Such as 304 cast steel flanges.

  3. Production Standards

  The production standards for cast flanges focus on material composition and casting quality:

  International Standards: ASTM A216 (Carbon cast steel flange standard, applicable to medium-temperature pressure pipelines), ASTM A351 (Stainless steel cast flange standard, covering materials such as CF8 and CF3).

  Domestic Standards: GB/T 12229-2005 (Technical Conditions for Carbon Steel Castings of General-Purpose Valves) and GB/T 12230-2005 (Technical Conditions for Stainless Steel Castings of General-Purpose Valves), regulating the production of cast flanges in China.

  4. Material Standards Cast flanges are mainly made of cast iron and cast steel. Common standards are as follows:

  Cast Iron: GB/T 9439-2010 (Gray Cast Iron, suitable for low-pressure, normal-temperature civil pipelines), GB/T 1348-2009 (Ductile Cast Iron, used for medium- and low-pressure industrial pipelines).

  Cast Steel: GB/T 11352-2009 (Cast Carbon Steel for General Engineering Use, suitable for medium- and low-pressure environments without strong corrosion), ASTM A217 (Alloy Cast Steel Flange Standard, used for high-temperature, medium-pressure pipelines).

  Cast Stainless Steel: GB/T 2100-2002 (General Purpose Corrosion-Resistant Steel Castings, suitable for low-pressure, mildly corrosive environments).

  5. Application Advantages

  Low cost and high production efficiency: The casting process eliminates the need for complex forging steps, resulting in high raw material utilization. It is particularly suitable for mass production of flanges with complex shapes, reducing procurement and manufacturing costs.

  Adaptable to complex structural requirements: Flanges with special grooves and holes can be produced using molds to meet specific pipe connection structural requirements (such as irregular pipe interfaces in civil buildings).

  Easy installation: Relatively lightweight, and some cast iron flanges are inexpensive, making them suitable for rapid installation and replacement in low-pressure, normal-temperature environments (such as maintenance of civil water supply and drainage pipes).
